Having moved on from my battered old Nikon D40 with it’s kit lenses has made quite a difference with regard to detail and usability in low light.
That aside I’ve been on a bit of a learning curve, taking much more manual control over what I’m doing and leaving a bit less to chance (not too much though!).

These portraits you’ve been doing lately are excellent. Love the subtle light you use while still being able to bring out so much detail.
